What is eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)?

Eyelid surgery, known as blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure designed to rejuvenate the appearance of the eyes. As a critical component of facial rejuvenation, this surgery addresses common signs of aging around the eyes, such as wrinkles, excess skin, and fat bulges. Through carefully placed incisions along the natural contours of the eyelids, excess skin and fat are removed from both the upper and lower eyelids. This results in a refreshed and more youthful look. Additional treatments, such as BOTOX®, fat injections, or chemical peels, can also complement the procedure to enhance the overall aesthetic outcome. Whether focusing on upper or lower eyelids, blepharoplasty is tailored to the individual's needs to provide a more vibrant and youthful gaze.

The benefits of eyelid surgery

By addressing signs of aging around the eyes, eyelid surgery can provide the following advantages:

  • Complementary treatments: Can be combined with BOTOX®, fat injections, or chemical peels for comprehensive facial rejuvenation.
  • Customizable options: Tailored to individual needs, allowing for specific adjustments to upper or lower eyelids.
  • Enhanced confidence: Eyelid surgery boosts self-esteem by restoring vibrancy to your eyes.
  • Improved aesthetics: Removes excess skin, wrinkles, and fat bulges, creating a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance.
  • Mild discomfort: Post-surgery discomfort is generally mild, ensuring a comfortable recovery experience.
  • Short recovery: Performed outpatient under local, allowing a swift return to activities.
  • Subtle scarring: Incisions made in natural eyelid contours minimize visible scarring.
  • Visible results: Dramatic improvements are visible within the first 2 to 3 weeks, with continued enhancement over several months.

Is eyelid surgery right for me?

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is ideal for those experiencing signs of aging around the eyes, such as wrinkles, excess skin, or puffiness. This procedure could benefit individuals who notice a tired or aged appearance due to these changes. If you find that sagging eyelids or undereye bags are impacting your confidence or if your vision is affected by drooping upper lids, eyelid surgery may be the solution. This procedure suits anyone seeking to rejuvenate their gaze, restore a youthful look, and enhance their overall facial aesthetics. To determine if eyelid surgery is right for you, we invite you to schedule a personalized consultation with our team in which we can assess your concerns and recommend a tailored treatment plan that meets your goals.

The Eyelid Surgery Procedure – What to Expect

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is often performed on an outpatient basis, in which you may receive either local or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the surgery and your preference. The procedure typically involves a series of steps to rejuvenate the appearance of the eyes. We start by making tiny incisions along the natural contours of the eyelids to minimize visible scarring. Excess skin and fat are removed for upper eyelid surgery to address sagging or drooping. In the case of lower eyelid surgery, puffiness and excess skin folds are targeted. Laser technology, chemical peels, or BOTOX® may also be incorporated to enhance results. The entire process usually takes 45-90 minutes and is comfortably performed as an outpatient procedure.

Eyelid surgery recovery

Following eyelid surgery, the recovery process is relatively straightforward. Patients typically experience mild discomfort, with any bruising expected to fade within two weeks. While some swelling is common, it should significantly diminish within two to three weeks, revealing the enhanced and refreshed appearance of the eyes. Unlike other surgical procedures, there is minimal downtime associated with eyelid surgery, allowing patients to return to work within three to seven days. Exercise can be resumed after ten days, and the final results become increasingly noticeable in two to three weeks. Throughout the recovery period, we offer ongoing support, with follow-up appointments to monitor progress and address any post-operative concerns. The absence of visible bandages streamlines recovery, contributing to a more comfortable and efficient healing experience.

Why did my surgeon talk about my eyebrows during my consultation?

Brow lift surgery is often combined with eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) to achieve a maximal result. The brow and eyelids often go hand-in-hand regarding facial rejuvenation surgery. If you have sagging brows and this is not addressed during your eyelid surgery, your result may be suboptimal and result in your ultimate dissatisfaction. If you have significant sagging of your brow, your surgeon will likely recommend that you also have a brow lift to give you the best results.

Will I be awake or asleep for surgery?

Most eyelid procedures, including upper and lower eyelids, can only be done in the office under local anesthesia, depending on your and your surgeon’s preferences. Some patients want to be under “twilight” because they feel it’s safer than general anesthesia, and other patients prefer general anesthesia because they “want to be out” and not know what’s going on. It is essential to remember that general anesthesia is very safe for those patients who are generally healthy. Additionally, some surgeons have a firm preference and will only perform your blepharoplasty surgery one way or the other.

Will I be able to go home on the day of my procedure?

If you are only having eyelid surgery, you can go home on the same day as your surgery. If you have other procedures in addition to this, like a facelift, you may be required to stay in the hospital overnight or have a nurse go to your home with you for the first night. We will discuss your options with you. If you are coming in from out of town and would like to stay in the Chicago area, please ask our office for hotel options. You will need to stay near Chicago for 7-10 days for post-operative care.

Why did my surgeon talk about my entire face during my consultation?

Facial harmony is a term used to describe how all of the different components of your face fit together to create an overall pleasing appearance. When you have finally decided that you would like to speak to a surgeon regarding your eyes, you should expect a thoughtful and thorough discussion. It would be best to arrive at the consultation prepared to discuss your concerns related to your eyes, as we must understand what is bothering you. He will then discuss these issues with you and provide you with options. A thorough facial evaluation in preparation for surgery will entail your surgeon discussing your entire face with you, not just your expressed concerns. First, we must consider the aging process and what is happening to your facial tissues. Second, every component of your face contributes to facial harmony, and we must maintain balance. Third, if you are thinking about more than one aspect of your face, it is often easier to undergo one combined operation than two. Lastly, we want you to have the most exceptional results possible. We are dedicated to discussing your concerns and what we feel is necessary to achieve that goal.
